Some simple ways to save on gas:
1. Don't fill until the last quarter tank. If you do this, it can extend your gas because you are hauling a lighter load as the tank nears empty. This also allows you to buy gas on low-cost days. However, in cold weather, you run an increased risk of condensation in the fuel tank. And you never know when you might be in an emergency and need some gasoline in your car!
2. Buy gas on Wednesday. Gas prices are statistically the cheapest on Wednesdays, but this is only statistically true over a large number of days. It won't be true every week.
3. Check the air pressure in your tires every week. Buy an accurate tire gauge. Keep all tires inflated to the pressure as recommended for your car.

And of course, drive less. Share your ideas, we all need help with gas these days!

I've heard waiting to fill has been touted as harder on your vehicle, because you drudge up the additives which have been settling out of the rest of your gas.
However...
As for the cold weather talk, that is the absolute best time to buy gasoline (I don't really think condensation can hurt as much as this:) In the US, the gas pumps are not calibrated to account for the expansion nor contraction of liquids in the tank, some even display this fact, like Costco. So the BEST time to buy gas is early in the morning on a colder day when the gasoline is more compact. This is in direct contrast to the fact that gas companies don't account for the expansion of gas in the tanks on a hot day, they also charge more because of high demand on those high A/C days. A double Whammy!!
